NEVER ENDING ROAD

NEVER ENDING ROAD

Through faith and belief
The story
The childhood dreams you’re sold,
With soft heeled feet
The friends you meet
A story yet to be told.
The first faltering steps
In wonder
On the never ending road,
With guidance and correction
Natural selection
From elders you’re lovingly showed.
With fleet of foot
 Adolescence
And its entire attendant pains,
The blemish of skin
And not fitting in
Fumbled love with dubious stains.
The first job
Responsibility
In the land of milk and honey,
Streets of mould
Not paved with gold
Parents want half of your money.
Drunken moments bring
The baby
And a reluctant, hasty marriage,
Money is tight
Already a fight
You’ve not even left the carriage.
The rented house
Screaming child
Life is tough you soon discover,
You gamble and drink
Into the pit you sink
When you find she’s taken a lover.
Back on the road
Defeated
Your faults she’d even listed,
Neck in a rope
As you smoke bad dope
Your child only sees you twisted.
The road can turn
To redemption
Your parents will help you walk,
With lengthened stride
You regain some pride
There’s hope now when you talk.
Streetlights shine
New future
You fall for a divorcee called Sue,
She maybe plain
But a holiday in Spain
Shows she’s the one for you.
The road is now tree lined
New house
Two children and a cat,
First child
 Teenage and wild
You want to meet for a chat.
You admit you were
A bad father
His forgiveness you beg if he can,
Such fun
New start with your son
You can guide him to become a man.
The road cracks
As with time
Wear and tear and hard use tell the tale,
Kids grown
Nest flown
And Sue is looking so drawn and pale.
Darkness extinguishes a journey
She’s gone
The love of your life has died,
Cancer came
You whisper her name
It still feels that she’s by your side.
The road comes to a junction
Time to go
As your tired body gives up the fight
Will it be up top?
Or will you drop?
There’s Sue guiding you to the light.
We all make this journey
On the road
With the junction far ahead out of sight,
You’ve a voice
Make the choice
Then at the crossroads you can follow the light.
