TOYS

 TOYS
The advent of arcade games,
Super Mario, zombies and other such names,
For many years young girls and boys,
Received as presents, large plastic toys.
Happy days spent pulling straws from ker plunk,
To hoping you don’t get your battleship sunk.
Loading a suitcase onto buckaroo,
Pulling out the funny bone during operation too.
Hornby train sets and scalextrix cars,
To battling tops and Kung fu fighting stars.
We used place mats to play table tennis,
Now it’s Wii Olympic Games with Jessica Ennis.
When Dad was a boy he had a wooden painted gun,
Mom had a clothes peg doll, I bet she had fun.
We played pro-shot golf during a power strike,
A bull horn or a chopper was a fabulous bike,
Now it’s BMX, cross terrain and unisex trail,
Even skateboards and tri- bikes have masts and sails.
I remember from around the age of eleven
Every young boy dreamed of owning a Johnny 7,
A rocket launching gun, firing grenades on elastic,
But it never lasted long because it was made of plastic.

  1. I love all the new toys. So cleverly designed. Girls toys when I was young were mostly about practicing to be a Mum. Loved the poem though. It was great x
