WHAT GOD?

What God?
When the dust and ash fell on New York taking so many lives,
Police, firemen, workers all, sons, husbands, fathers and wives.
When the planes were taken and torn from the sky,
Sentencing holidaymakers, business travellers and airline staff to die.
It just makes me think... what God would condone this?

When a person can walk among shoppers in a market square,
And rip apart lives of women and children in a bombs infernal glare.
Innocents are just pawns in the pursuit of religions name,
Throughout history fanatics have craved spiritual fame.
It just makes me ask... what God would support this?

When families are destroyed through an individual’s belief,
Using Gods name and twisting his words to act like a thief.
Bending the scriptures to suit their own purpose for gain,
The disowning of so called non-believers, leave a family in pain.
It just makes me think... what God would ever promote this?

When a man creates an ideology and expects all to follow,
Their radical beliefs and fundamentalism so very hard to swallow.
To me, the true measure of Gods will and mans self worth,
Is to treat all men, women and children as equals on earth.
It just makes me ask... what God (in any form) wouldn't want this?

This was my first piece of work to be published. I've dedicated to my cousin Vincent, who has felt the anguish of losing loved ones to a supposed religion

  1. Very good Phil, it is certainly a question I have asked myself a lot too.

  2. Phil the God i have come to know does not condone these actions. It is man that twists the words of his book to suit their own purposes. They kill, steal and destroy in His name, when it is their own selfish desires they want to accomplish. This poem reflects how i felt until about 3 years ago. i have been on a search for peace and a little understanding since 911 and 4 family members dead in 15 months. i was angry at God for a very long time. through my search i have found some peace.

  3. Phil, What u write echoes in the mind of many peace loving people, whatever their religious beliefs, n u put it so succinctly we should treat each other as equals none more superior than the other - even by virtue of wealth n status
