JESUS' ENGLISH HOLIDAY

"And did those feet in ancient times, walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy lamb of God, on England's pleasant pastures seen?"
                 'Jerusalem' William Blake

A young man stood on the deck
His eyes on the rugged coast,
The son of man was coming to England
This is no idle boast.

He travelled with his favourite uncle
Joseph of Arimathea wanted Cornish tin,
They landed in the Roseland peninsula
Jesus's holiday in England could begin.

He stood looking out at his world
At Penzance, where the waves crashed on the rocks,
He preached in Looe, walked along the coastal path
Talking with fishermen and shepherds tending flocks.

He shared wisdom with the Druids
He might even have stood in their circle of stones,
The Romans feared the magic of these men
With ritualistic spells using a dead babies bones.

The most sacred place of old Albion
The mystical Glastonbury tor,
Jesus was said to have preached to the pagans
His words passed down in ancient English folklore.

So if you should visit my Cornwall
Walk the beautiful beaches or the bleak and ghostly Bodmin moor,
You follow in our Lord Jesus footsteps
He enjoyed a holiday here before.

  2. The Roseland Peninsula and Cornwall are beautiful.I can easily imagine Him there, particularly at St Just in the Roseland, and I like the interaction you've created with the other religions. A wonderful poem and photos, Phil, thank you.
