SPANISH GOLD

SPANISH GOLD

I remember a sweet called
Spanish gold.
                   A coconut concoction
With sparkling dust rolled.
In waxed paper, folded packet,
 This treasure was sold.
There were other delights,
Way back in my school days of old.
Blackjacks, fruit salads and swizzels
With ‘Love Hearts’ declaring
‘I need you’.
Parma violets and ‘Kaylie’
That turned your tongue blue.
Also don’t forget ‘Bazooka’ Joe
The pink bubble gum you chew.
Toffee logs, Jamboree bags
And white sugared mice,
Flying saucers, candy shrimps
Were also, very nice.
The two pence mix up
Was a very good price.
Candy cigarettes and Spanish gold tobacco
My one and only childhood vice.
